Why was a portion of Route 59 in Airmont closed Jan. 12? What we know

A section of Route 59 was closed for a time in Rockland County’s Airmont village on Monday, Jan. 12, after a large pothole became a sinkhole, the Ramapo police said.

The section of road, from Brookside Avenue to Campbell Avenue/Hemion Road, was reopened as of 11:55 p.m. on Monday, according to a police news release.

The highway department and the state Department of Transportation was notified, the police said.
