Here’s what to know about the fall season in 2025.

When is the first day of fall?

The fall season begins on the autumnal equinox, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which falls on Sep. 22 this year.

What is the autumnal equinox?

The autumnal equinox occurs when the sun “crosses the equator going from north to south,” the almanac says, causing the sun to rise later and nightfall arriving earlier.

How long will fall last?

Fall continues through the start of the winter solstice, which falls on Dec. 21 in 2025, lasting about 14 weeks.

2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac fall outlook

The almanac’s predictions, updated July 11, show a cooler-than-average fall season for Binghamton.

For the Northeast, the predictions show September bringing in an average temperature of 59 degrees, two degrees below normal, and 3.5 inches of precipitation.

In October, the almanac expects an average temperature of 46 degrees, three degrees below normal, with 2.5 inches of rain.
