A Monroe County Court jury on Thursday convicted the man accused of shooting a co-worker to death last summer inside a Wegmans warehouse on Brooks Avenue in Gates, New York.
Guilty after jury trial
Kyshonn Green, 33, of Gates was found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of a co-worker following a jury trial, according to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office. Both men worked for Wegmans at the time of the fatal encounter.
Victim shot multiple times inside Wegmans distribution center
J’Mere Ridley-Smith, 25, of Rochester was shot and killed around 4:15 p.m. Saturday, July 26, while working at the Wegmans distribution center located at 1500 Brooks Ave., according to Gates Police Chief Rob Long. Officers responded to reports of a shooting and arrived to find Ridley-Smith had been shot multiple times while working inside the facility. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Long said that Ridley-Smith was loading pallets within a cooler unit within the center when he was shot. Multiple 9mm casings were found at the scene, he said.
Green fled out of state and was apprehended by the United States Marshals Service in Knoxville, Tennessee one day after the slaying.
‘Brutal act of violence’
“J’Mere Ridley-Smith was simply doing what we all strive to do, working hard, contributing to his community, and living his life, when he was senselessly ambushed by a coworker,” said Assistant District Attorney Kevin Sunderland, who prosecuted the case with ADA James Nguyen. “Every person has the right to feel safe in their workplace and Kyshonn Green shattered that sense of security through a deliberate and brutal act of violence. His actions not only took J’Mere’s life, but also inflicted lasting trauma on everyone who witnessed and was impacted by this tragedy.”
What’s next?
Green is scheduled to be sentenced by Monroe County Court Judge Douglas Randall on June 30. He faces a sentence of between 15 and 25 years to life in prison.
