Who will be lohud Baseball Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital for May 6-11?
This week, coaches have nominated eight athletes. Read about their contributions, then scroll to the poll to vote. The winner will be announced on social media on Wednesday. The poll will close at 3 p,m. on Wednesday.
Last week’s winner was Nanuet’s Paul Peterson, who edged Roosevelt’s Michael Hernandez for the honor.
The other winners this season are Pleasantville’s Matt O’Neill, Yorktown’s Derek Patrissi, Eastchester’s Justin Mylenski and Clarkstown North’s JD Santulli.
Blaise Ascanio, Byram Hills
The sophomore had six hits last week. He went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI in a 9-7 win over Scarsdale in the Casey Cup, which honors late Ossining coach Bill Casey. Ascanio, who started in the outfield, picked up the win in that game in relief.
Connor Brice, Tuckahoe
The junior, who pitched, played second and DHd last week, excelled over four games. He hurled six innings of three-hit ball, striking out seven in a 10-1 win over Valhalla. He went 7 for 16 (.438 average) with six RBI and eight stolen bases.
RJ Grabeklis, Mahopac
The junior pitcher picked up a win against Somers, throwing five innings of one-hit, no-run ball and striking out 10 as the Pac took the second game of a doubleheader 10-0 after dropping the first in extra innings. Grabeklis also had two RBI in the second game.
Nathan Krapf, Hastings
The junior went 6 2/3 innings surrendering just three singles and striking out 10 while picking up the win in a 2-1 victory over Briarcliff. Krapf also had a hit in three trips to the plate.
Gibby Poll, Sleepy Hollow
The senior righty pitched a complete game, 2-0 win in the opener of a doubleheader against Roosevelt. He went seven innings and allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out 14. He also helped his own cause, driving in a run and scoring a run. In the nightcap, he drove in two runs, scored a run and stole a base in a 6-2 win.
Evan Schwartz, Harrison
The junior infielder continued his hot hitting last week. On Saturday in a 5-3 loss to Rye in the Andrew Gurgitano Memorial Game, Schwartz went 1 for 3 with a double and two runs scored. The following day against Horace Greeley, he went 3 for 4 with two singles, a double, three runs scored and three RBI to help the Huskies secure a key, 9-8 league victory.
Mike Sica, Westlake
Over the course of five games, the senior had eight hits and 10 RBI and pitched the Wildcats to two wins, striking out 14 over 11 innings.
Tyler Wein, Albertus Magnus
The sophomore catcher went 3 for 6 with a single, double, home run, a walk and five RBI as the Falcons beat Irvington and Pearl River.
