Trump visit to Rockland County expected to spark protests, major traffic delays

President Donald Trump’s planned visit to Rockland County on Friday is expected to bring political attention, protests and traffic disruptions across the Hudson Valley.

Trump is scheduled to appear with Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., as Republicans work to defend one of the nation’s most competitive House districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

When and where is the event?

Trump is scheduled to appear Friday, May 22, at the Eugene Levy Fieldhouse at Rockland Community College in Suffern.

Doors are expected to open at 11 a.m., with the program beginning at 3 p.m.

Tickets were available on a first-come, first-served basis through online registration.

The visit marks a rare presidential appearance in Rockland County and comes during a closely watched election cycle in New York’s 17th Congressional District.

What the visit will focus on

The White House said Trump’s remarks will focus on affordability and federal tax policy.

Administration officials highlighted provisions in a recent tax and spending package, including:

Lawler has made expanding the SALT deduction a major priority for suburban New York taxpayers.

Democrats, however, have criticized the broader legislation, arguing it reduces federal Medicaid and health care spending.

Why the visit matters politically

Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, which is considered one of the nation’s top House battlegrounds.

Five Democrats are competing in a June 23 primary for the chance to challenge Lawler in the 2026 general election.

Trump has repeatedly endorsed Lawler and is expected to highlight the race during Friday’s event.

Democrats and local leaders react

The visit has drawn criticism from Democratic candidates and local advocacy groups.

Some Democrats have argued the visit is politically motivated and does not address local concerns involving affordability, health care and federal policy priorities.

Civil rights leaders and local NAACP officials also criticized Trump’s visit and Lawler’s role in bringing the president to the district.

Organizers said demonstrators plan to gather outside Rockland Community College during the event.

Speakers at a rally ahead of the visit cited concerns about civil rights, immigration policy and cuts to federal programs.

Traffic delays expected across Hudson Valley

Drivers in Rockland County and nearby areas are expected to face significant delays because of the presidential motorcade and security restrictions.

Possible traffic trouble spots include:

Local roads near Rockland Community College are also expected to face restrictions and security checkpoints.

Traffic is expected to intensify late Friday morning and peak between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Specific motorcade routes have not been released for security reasons.

Additional local impacts

Some school districts announced early dismissals because of expected congestion tied to the visit.

Officials have encouraged residents to plan ahead and allow extra travel time Friday afternoon.
