These Rochester tours reveal hidden history by foot and boat

Rochester Brainery is planning several tours this summer that will explore Rochester history.

Among the tours are:

“History Spotlight: Susan B. Anthony House Tour & Genesee River Guide” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon June 6. It will start at Rochester by Water, formerly Corn Hill Navigation, at 280 Exchange Blvd. Riverie Tour Boat will cruise south to the Erie Canal, with live narration focusing on how these historic waterways shaped Rochester. Then attendees will take their own transportation to the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, 17 Madison St., where they will learn about the suffragist’s life and explore all three floors of her home. The price is $60.

“Hidden History: Center City Central” will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. June 27, starting at Rochester by Water. Matt Rogers of The Lost Borough and Riverie Boat Tours will lead a one-hour, 1.5-mile walk in the Corn Hill neighborhood, downtown Rochester and along the Genesee River, discussing unique landmarks and people. Then attendees will board the Riverie for a one-hour cruise. The price is $25.

Hidden History: Riverie Tour of Center City and Genesee River will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 28 and repeated at the same time July 19, rain or shine. The 2.5-mile walking tour will explore parts of the High Falls District, Four Corners, Washington Square, Midtown and Upper Falls.  People, events, inventions, folklore, athletics, urban legends and more will be featured. The price is $55.

Hidden History: Neighborhood of the Arts will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and repeated from 1 to 3 p.m. July 18. Rogers will lead the 2.5-mile walking tour. The price is $25. The Brainery is also offering several “Architecture in the Wild” walking tours, during which members of the Young Urban Preservationists, an affiliate group of The Landmark Society of Western New York, will teach about the architectural history of several city neighborhoods. They include Corn Hill, May 21; NOTA, June 3; Maplewood’s Seneca Parkway, June 18; Upper Monroe, July 15; and the 19th Ward, July 23. All are from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m., and each costs $30.
