Historic rivalries and sectional rematches among them, there’s no shortage of intriguing boys lacrosse matchups this spring.
The regular season opened on March 19 and continues through May 20. Here are five games we’re looking forward to most:
Game No. 1: Penfield at West Genesee-III
When: Tuesday, April 14
In 2025, Penfield claimed its first section title in several years and cruised through its state regional matchup against Orchard Park-VI. But the Patriots met their match in the state semifinals against West Genny, falling 16-6 against the then-undefeated Wildcats.
West Genny is one of New York state’s historic lacrosse programs. Come mid-April, with much of the same roster from last season, Penfield will gauge whether it’s closed the gap.
Game No. 2: Victor at Pittsford
When: Wednesday, April 29
These two teams met for a spirited Class B section semifinal last year, which the Blue Devils exited with a 12-7 win. The game was closer than the final score indicates. Tied 4-4 early in the second quarter, Pittsford’s apparent go-ahead goal was waved off, and Victor followed with eight of the next 11 goals.
Both teams figure to compete for the Class B title this year, and this late April matchup could serve as a sectional preview.
Game No. 3: Honeoye Falls-Lima at Penn Yan
When: Thursday, May 7
Section V’s reigning Class C and Class D champions match up in a non-league game this May. No team has won more championships than Penn Yan, which reclaimed the sectional crown — the 26th in team history — en route to the state title. HFL has won four section titles since 2021, which includes a stretch of three straight.
This will be the teams’ 10th matchup over the last 20 years. Penn Yan owns the head-to-head advantage with seven wins.
Game No. 4: Hilton at Irondequoit
When: Thursday, May 7
There’s been little difference between these two clubs over the last handful of years. Each of the last three matchups, dating back to 2024, has required overtime.
Irondequoit has won two of those games, which includes the teams’ section quarterfinal matchup last spring. Hilton held multiple two-goal leads in that game, but Irondequoit’s three scores in the fourth force OT, and Colin Giudice scored in overtime to complete the comeback.
Game No. 5: Bloomfield-Honeoye at Midlakes
When: Thursday, May 14
These top Finger Lakes teams met in a thriller last spring, when Bloomfield-Honeoye’s Brennan Thomas scored with five seconds left in regulation to send his team to the Class D section final. The Pride allowed five goals in the opening quarter and trailed 7-4 at halftime, but surged in the second half in a comeback win.
