These 40 NY hospitals earned top safety grades in new rankings

Forty hospitals in New York earned top performance ratings in a seasonal “report card” for spring 2026.

According to the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit focused on patient safety, the report evaluated nearly 3,000 hospitals nationwide on safety, quality and transparency using grades from A to F.

Leapfrog said it is the only peer-reviewed hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that can harm patients. The rankings consider staffing, medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections, along with clinical processes and patient outcomes.

Of the nearly 3,000 hospitals surveyed nationwide, 143 in New York were graded. Forty hospitals — about 28% statewide — earned an A grade for spring 2026.

Leapfrog also recognized a select group of hospitals for “sustained excellence” with a “Straight A” designation. About 15% of hospitals nationwide earned that distinction, including 11 in New York.
