The Democrat and Chronicle is moving offices the week of Aug. 31 to coworking space in Henrietta.
Newspaper employees will work in a modern environment at Spot Coworking, located on Goodway Drive off of Winton Road.
The D&C’s current Main Street offices opened in May 2016 on the site of the former Midtown Plaza mall.
The move comes in a decade when work habits have changed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the boom in video-based communications technology allowing people to work in the office, at home or elsewhere.
The new workspace matches this moment in time, with employees able to drop by and plug in their laptop in any number of Spot Coworking workspaces or to work their full shift in the D&C office suite.
“This modern workspace is designed for how journalism happens today, with areas for focused reporting work and real-time collaboration among our newsroom team,” Executive Editor Mike Kilian said.”The flexibility of this space matches how our staff actually works now,” General Manager Heather Falkey said. “Whether team members come in multiple days a week or work remotely, we have the infrastructure to support both approaches.”
The Democrat and Chronicle staff operates on a flexible model, with some choosing to work some days in-office and others working remotely from home or in the field covering a story.
D&C employees will also have the option of working in shared space at other Spot Coworking locations in downtown Rochester and in Victor.
Move latest step in nearly two-century history of D&C
The D&C was founded in 1833 in Rochester as The Balance. After changes in name and ownership, the paper was known as the Daily Democrat. In 1870, it merged with a younger local news outlet, the Chronicle, and became the Democrat and Chronicle.
Gannett Co. Inc and Frank Gannett later bought the newspaper. Its first edition under the new owners published in 1928.
That same year, the D&C started operating out of a building on 55 Exchange Blvd. in Rochester that would become Gannett Co. Inc. headquarters until the mid-1980s and remain the D&C’s offices for another three decades.
This new space reflects the transformation of the D&C meeting the moment as a digital-first publication of USA TODAY Co. and the USA TODAY Network.
