Tempers flared after the final play of a light practice on Day 8 of New York Giants training camp Thursday at The Greenbrier. Wide receiver Xavier Gipson and cornerback Nic Jones exchanged punches, resembling a “pair of featherweights” as they traded blows while wearing helmets.
Teammates quickly separated them, but not before each landed a few punches.
The scuffle took place during a walkthrough without full pads following three consecutive padded practices. Competition for roster spots remains intense under head coach John Harbaugh.
Gipson, a 5-foot-9, 189-pound undrafted free agent from Stephen F. Austin, entered the NFL with the Jets in 2023 as a return specialist. The 25-year-old previously spent time with the Giants and Eagles before returning to New York earlier this year.
Jones, also 189 pounds, is a 6-foot cornerback selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the seventh round in 2023 out of Ball State. A Super Bowl LVIII champion as a rookie, the 24-year-old signed with the Giants in 2025, appeared in 13 games last season, and is competing for a depth and special teams role after shoulder surgery.
The brief exchange highlighted the competitive edge even on a lighter camp day.
