Damage from flooding earlier this month has forced the indefinite closure of the spring-fed public swimming area at Stony Brook State Park.
Park officials announced the closure in social media posts and on the park website, noting that flood damage has also resulted in the closure of Stony Brook’s Gorge Trail.
Park administrators said repairs are already underway, but both the swimming pool and Gorge Trail may remain closed for the entire summer season.
The East and West Rim Trails remain open, park brass said.
Officials encouraged visitors to follow the guidance of park staff and to obey all posted signs.
Under normal circumstances, the public swimming pool is generally open seven days a week, from around mid-June until Labor Day.
Major improvements to swimming area completed in 2024
In 2024, the park unveiled the results of $4.5 million in improvements to the public swimming area.
The upgrades included a new 1,700 square-foot visitors’ bathhouse with changing rooms, showers and restrooms, and a 750 square-foot building to house a lifeguard headquarters, a first aid area and office space.
The 570-acre state park is located at 10820 Route 36 South in Dansville. The North Entrance for day use visitors features a picnic area with tables, grills, restrooms and entrances to hiking trails.
The park offers a variety of play fields and courts including for tennis, baseball, volleyball and basketball. The entrance fee for day use visitors is $9 per vehicle. The park is open from dawn to dusk, closing at dark, year round.
