Smart veteran signings the Jets could still make before training camp

The New York Jets deserve plenty of credit for the work they’ve done this offseason. General manager Darren Mougey attacked several roster needs through free agency and the most recent NFL draft while giving new head coach Aaron Glenn a solid foundation heading into his first training camp.

That doesn’t mean the roster is finished. The weeks leading up to training camp often present teams with one last opportunity to add experienced veterans before the competition begins.

Whether it’s strengthening depth, adding another locker-room leader, or creating competition at a position of need, the right signing can pay dividends long after the regular season kicks off. With that in mind, here are five veteran free agents who still make sense for the Jets.

Jadeveon Clowney – Edge

Pass rushers are never a luxury in today’s NFL, and Clowney has shown throughout his career that he can still impact games. While he may no longer be an every-down defender, adding another proven edge rusher would give Aaron Glenn valuable flexibility as he builds his defensive rotation.

Bobby Okereke – Linebacker

The addition of Demario Davis provides leadership and stability, but linebacker depth remains a question. Okereke would offer an experienced insurance policy behind Davis and Jamien Sherwood while bringing a proven tackling presence capable of contributing immediately if called upon.

James Daniels – Interior offensive line

The Jets appear set with their projected starters, but offensive line depth can disappear quickly over a 17-game season. Daniels’ ability to play multiple interior positions would give New York an experienced veteran capable of stepping into the lineup if injuries become an issue.

Curtis Samuel – Wide receiver

Garrett Wilson headlines the receiver room, but Samuel would bring versatility that few remaining free agents can match. Whether lining up in the slot, outside or occasionally in the backfield, the veteran could provide another dependable option while competing for meaningful snaps.

Keenan Allen – Wide receiver

Allen may no longer be the Pro Bowl receiver he once was, but few veterans understand how to get open and move the chains better. His route running, football IQ, and reliable hands could make him an ideal complement to a young receiving corps while giving the Jets another trusted target on critical downs.

The Jets don’t need another headline-grabbing move before training camp opens. They’ve already assembled a roster capable of competing under Glenn’s leadership.

What they can still use is another experienced contributor who raises the floor of the roster. Whether it’s reinforcing the offensive line, adding another pass rusher or giving the offense another reliable playmaker, championship contenders are always searching for one more piece. The Jets should be no different.
