In the years since the Sept. 11 attacks, communities across the Lower Hudson Valley have created permanent memorials to honor those who were lost. They stand at firehouses, in town parks and at community centers, each rooted in the same enduring promise: Never Forget.
From The Rising at Kensico Dam in Valhalla, Westchester County’s official memorial, to the waterfront monument in West Haverstraw, Rockland County’s official memorial, to the Putnam Heroes Memorial at Cornerstone Park in Carmel, these sites pay tribute to the local residents whose lives were taken that day. Some memorials have also expanded their remembrance to include those who died from 9/11-related illnesses.
At several memorials along the Hudson River, the New York City skyline remains visible in the distance, creating a powerful connection between these quiet places of reflection and the city forever changed by the attacks.
Whether marked by a 300-foot spiral or a simple stone monument, each memorial offers a solemn space to reflect, pray and remember those lost on 9/11 — and each carries the same message: “Never Forget.”
