Rush-Henrietta captures Section V softball title with walk-off win over Greece

Eighth-grade outfielder Kyla Piedici’s walk-off hit helped second-seeded Rush-Henrietta defeat No. 4 Greece Storm 7-6 in a come-from-behind victory to capture the Section V Class AAA championship Saturday afternoon at Monroe Community College.

Coach Lynn Rotola’s Royal Comets captured their second title in three seasons. They entered the seveth trailing 6-5. Elizabeth Gleghorn — whose walkoff in 2023 clinched the Class AA title in extras — hit a leadoff double, then Lizzie Rinella drove her home to tie it at 6. Katie MiIlitello reached on a fielder’s choice, then scored the game-winning run of Piedici’s hit.

Rush-Henrietta senior pitcher Kadyn Hartel was named MVP. She struck out eight batters in the circle. At the plate, Hartel was 2-3 with a two-run double while working a walk from the two-hole. Hartel was also the winning pitcher of the 2023 Class AA final. Audrey Gleghorn had multiple hits from the leadoff spot.

Greece catcher Hannah Keane was 3-4 with two triples and a two-run double that helped Storm take a 5-3 fourth inning lead. Senior pitcher Allison Sywulski took the loss with eight strikeouts.

Rush’s 2023 title is believed to be the program’s first championship. Greece clinched its second straight final, falling to Fairport in the 2024 Class AAA title game.

In Thursday’s semifinals, Rush-Henrietta beat No. 3 Fairport and Greece defeated top-seeded Padilla, the Rochester City Athletic Conference champion.
