The Red Cross said it has registered 54 people for emergency assistance after the five-alarm fire in a Yonkers high-rise on Tuesday, April 28.
Twenty-two households — 42 adults and 12 children — registered for help following the 51 Riverdale Ave. fire. The Red Cross said in a news release that assistance can include disaster health services, financial help and other care.
On Wednesday, April 29, the Red Cross met with residents who were unable to go back to their apartments after the fire and registered them. Families met with responders to identify short-term needs. Caseworkers will meet with families to discuss remaining recovery roadblocks and to connect them with nonprofit and/or government partners to help with longer-term needs, the Red Cross said.
No serious injuries due to the fire were reported. About 80 firefighters worked for a little more than an hour to bring the Tuesday morning fire under control in the 240-unit, 16-floor building, the fire department said.
The Red Cross said residents displaced by this fire who need help should call 1-877-RED CROSS (877-733-2767) and select option 1.
