Troopers were called to Shute Road in LaFayette around 1:35 a.m. Sunday, April 12, as it was reported that an erratic driver was traveling through residential yards at a high rate of speed, according to State Police.

That driver on Monday was identified as Irene McIntyre, 46, of East Syracuse, Onondaga County, troopers said.

Woman struck by car

McIntyre is accused of hitting a woman with her car before police arrived at the scene.

A man attempted to stop McIntyre by moving his car into the path of her car. McIntyre, according to police, rammed her car into his stopped vehicle. The man was still inside.

A trooper at the scene saw McIntyre “operate the vehicle in a manner that endangered individuals on scene,” which included again running over the already injured woman on the ground, as well as striking a second man who was trying to help the inured woman, according to State Police.

Despite repeated orders from troopers to stop, McIntyre did not. A trooper fired a division-issued firearm and struck McIntyre – who was alone in her car. She was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where she was pronounced dead, according to State Police.

Trooper, slain woman identified

State Police also identified the man who shot and killed McIntyre as Trooper Michael A. Sharshon. He has been a trooper for more than four years and is assigned to the State Police barracks in LaFayette. He was placed on “critical incident leave” after the fatal shooting, which is routine when a trooper’s actions while on duty result in the serious physical injury or death of another person, according to State Police.

The woman who was twice struck by McIntyre’s car before she died was identified as Cheryl Miron, 79, of Fayetteville, Onondaga County.

Investigation continues

The incident was recorded on responding troopers body-worn cameras, according to State Police. The department did not release the footage due to the ongoing investigations underway by both the New York State Police and the New Your Attorney General’s Office.
