One person was killed in a fiery two-vehicle crash involving a garbage truck on Interstate 590 in Brighton on Tuesday, Sept. 9, according to New York State Police.
The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of I-590, between Elmwood and Highland avenues, just before 3 p.m.
Corvette crashes and catches fire
Troopers said the crash began when a sports car attempted to pass a garbage truck. The car — a Chevrolet Corvette — struck the truck and was forced to the right, where it became wrapped around the front of the truck. The car then burst into flames.
Driver pronounced dead at scene
The 67-year-old driver of the Corvette was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.
The driver and passenger in the garbage truck were not injured.
Traffic impact and investigation
Traffic in the area was significantly slowed for several hours into the evening commute as emergency crews responded and investigated the scene.
State Police said the crash remains under investigation, but initial findings indicate that the garbage truck driver was not impaired at the time of the incident.
