A Wellsville man is dead after shooting himself at Jones Memorial Hospital on the night of Sept. 5.
Law enforcement and hospital officials said no one else was threatened or injured in the incident.
Wellsville police said they responded to the medical facility at approximately 7 p.m. for a report of an individual in the hospital’s Emergency Department lobby with a gun, threatening to harm himself.
Once officers arrived on scene, they made contact with the individual, Wellsville Police Chief Tim O’Grady said.
According to O’Grady, after repeated commands from officers to drop the gun, the individual turned it on himself and shot one round.
Hospital staff immediately began life saving care, according to police and hospital officials.
Authorities said the individual was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he died from the self-inflicted wound.
Police said the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no threat to public safety.
In a statement, Jones Memorial said “at no time did this individual threaten staff or any other patients in the building or on the premises.”
New York State Police, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Allegany County Area Peer Support assisted the Wellsville Police Department.
