As summer approaches, many New Yorkers are preparing for beach trips across the state. But for those hoping to fall asleep under the stars beside the water, the rules may come as a surprise.
Here’s what to know about camping on public beaches in New York.
Can you camp overnight on a public beach in New York?
In most cases, no.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, camping is only allowed in designated campgrounds and approved camping areas. Camping directly on public swimming beaches is generally prohibited.
The DEC also allows some backcountry camping on certain Forest Preserve lands without a permit, but campers must stay at least 150 feet away from roads, trails and bodies of water unless otherwise posted.
Rules can vary depending on whether the beach is operated by the state, a county or a municipality, so visitors should always check local regulations before planning an overnight stay.
Beaches near campgrounds in New York
While camping directly on the sand is generally not permitted, several popular beach destinations in New York offer nearby campgrounds.
Examples include:
Many state parks also offer tent sites, cabins and RV accommodations within walking or short driving distance of public beaches.
How to reserve a campsite in New York
Camping reservations at New York state parks and campgrounds must be made through the state’s reservation system.
Visitors can reserve campsites, cabins and RV spots through ReserveAmerica.
Reservations can typically be made up to nine months in advance, depending on the location and season.
Campers can also call 1-800-456-CAMP (1-800-456-2267) for reservations. State officials advise visitors not to contact individual campgrounds directly to book sites.
Check local beach rules before visiting
Some town- and county-operated beaches may have separate rules regarding overnight access, parking and camping restrictions.
Officials recommend checking local park websites before visiting to avoid fines or removal from the property.
