New Year's Eve, New Year's Day weather in Binghamton. See the forecast

If you’re going out in Binghamton to ring in the New Year, you may want to bundle up, as colder temperatures and snow showers are in the forecast.

National Weather Service Binghamton meteorologist Ema Sera said lake effect snow showers will be moving into the area on New Year’s Eve, and will likely linger throughout most of the week.

Here’s what to expect from the weather New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, and the rest of the week in Binghamton, according to the National Weather Service.

New Year’s Eve weather in Binghamton

There is a very small chance of snow showers in the morning New Year’s Eve, Sera said, but by the afternoon, the chance “increases significantly,” to a 60-70% chance, mainly after 1 p.m.

It will also be quite windy in the afternoon, with a southwest wind between 6 mph and 9 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, and a high near 28 degrees.

Snow showers will continue through the evening, with a 90% chance of showers and around an inch of accumulation in the forecast. The low is expected to be around 13 degrees.

Sera said between 1 p.m. and midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Binghamton area is expected to get 1-2 inches of snow.

New Year’s Day weather in Binghamton

New Year’s Day is expected to be less eventful, with only around a 20% chance of snow showers in the afternoon. However, Sera said it will be a bit colder than New Year’s Eve, with a high only near 21 degrees.

Sera also said NWS Binghamton is looking into potential snow squalls overnight on New Year’s Eve and into the morning on New Year’s Day, however, they are not “completely sure yet.”

The evening shows partly cloudy skies and a low around 11 degrees.

Weather Jan. 2-4 in Binghamton

Jan. 2 shows a slight chance of precipitation, with a 30% chance of snow showers in the afternoon, and a high near 27 degrees. The evening is forecasted to be mostly cloudy with a low around 15.

Jan. 3-4 is expected to be mostly uneventful with the possibility for lingering lake effect showers, Sera said, however the forecast is subject to change.

Jan. 3 shows partly sunny skies and a high near 26 degrees in the afternoon. The evening is expected to be mostly cloudy with a low around 13 degrees.

Jan. 4 is forecasted to be precipitation-free in the afternoon, but a 30% chance of snow showers is expected in the evening. The high on Jan. 4 will be near 28 degrees and the low will be around 17 degrees.
