Nets rookie guard Ben Saraf out for 10 days with left ankle sprain

The Brooklyn Nets unfortunately saw one of their rookies go down this weekend with what appeared to be an ankle sprain while on his G League assignment in Long Island. Brooklyn head coach Jordi Fernandez did not have many details to provide on Sunday, but the team was able to explain exactly what happened to rookie guard Ben Saraf and how long he will be out of action.

The Nets announced on Monday that Saraf suffered a left ankle sprain on Saturday while playing for the Long Island Nets and that he will be evaluated in 10 days. Assuming that Saraf is able to return to the court after the aforementioned 10 days, he would miss four games for Brooklyn and three games for Long Island, assuming that he would remain on assignment after his return.

Saraf, 19, had began this season as the starting point guard for head coach Jordi Fernandez, but eventually lost his job to veteran Tyrese Martin with Fernandez looking for more consistency at that spot. After Saraf went from being a starter to essentially out of Brooklyn’s rotation, it made sense to send Saraf to Long Island so that he could get more game reps than he would with Brooklyn at this point in the season.

In the meantime, the Nets also announced on Monday that they recalled rookies Nolan Traore and Danny Wolf ahead of Tuesday’s home matchup against the Boston Celtics. Like Saraf, Traore and Wolf had been relegated to minutes in Long Island as Fernandez has trimmed his rotation down to nine players with forward Jalen Wilson essentially not playing over the past two games.

If Tuesday’s matchup against the Celtics remains close for a significant portion of the game, it’s unlikely that Fernandez would give Traore and Wolf minutes outside of garbage time. However, with the way that both rookies have played during their recent G League assignment, it’s possible that they have proven that they deserve some NBA minutes outside of when the outcome is already decided.
