NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks is an interesting position this offseason as he will likely be hoping for the Nets to get the best pick possible in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft. Brooklyn could be trying to compete for a playoff spot next season, but plenty could change how the Nets continue rebuilding depending on the available options this summer.
“I think it depends a little on what becomes available. You just never know. And I think, again, we’ve put this Brooklyn Nets team and franchise in a place to be able to be opportunistic,” Marks said during his exit interview on Monday. When it comes to this offseason, the Nets are in a position to go in a number of directions thanks to their salary cap flexibility, but their pick in the Draft could be a significant driver as well.
“Does that fit our timeline? Does this particular trade work for us right now? I mean, you can always add talent, but does that talent fit our approach and for the development of these young guys and fit in with the group that we have and so forth,” Marks continued. “So, those are discussions I look forward to having with [head coach] Jordi [Fernandez] and the rest of the coaching staff, front office and so forth.”
The Nets finished the 2025-26 season with the third-worst record (20-62) in the league this season, meaning that their pick could be as high as No. 1, but also be as low as No. 7. As it pertains to which direction Brooklyn could head in this offseason, their decision-making process will likely change depending on whether they’re able to select BYU forward AJ Dybantsa or Illinois guard Keaton Wagler, just to name a couple of players.
As of this writing, the Nets are projected to have almost $47 million in cap space so they could sign some free-agents to put around forward Michael Porter Jr. and center Nic Claxton if that is the direction Marks wants to head in. However, it seems like Marks is approaching this summer by keeping his options open and that could mean that the Lottery would have a substantial impact on the direction of the organization moving into next year.
