Man dies after deputies shoot him at Henrietta Super 8 motel

A man in his 60s died Sunday afternoon after Monroe County sheriff’s deputies shot him at a Henrietta motel, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the Super 8 motel on Lehigh Station Road around 4 p.m. after 911 calls reported a suicidal man.

Deputies say man was armed with box cutter

Deputies arrived within minutes and encountered the man armed with a box cutter, which authorities said he appeared to be using in an attempt to harm himself.

Deputies gave the man several commands to drop the weapon, Chief Deputy Michael Fowler said. The man did not comply, and deputies fired their weapons, striking him.

Emergency medical personnel responded and attempted to save the man, but he died at the scene.

The man was from the Rochester area, Fowler said. His family has been notified of his death.

No one else was injured.

Attorney general investigating shooting

The New York State Attorney General’s Office will lead the investigation, as required by state law for officer-involved shootings.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Internal Affairs Unit also will conduct investigations.

The two deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy. They also are receiving support through the Sheriff’s Office wellness program.

“The deputies are shaken,” Fowler said. “It’s not something that they set out to do.”

The motel cooperated with investigators and provided surveillance video.

The investigation is expected to take several weeks, while the Attorney General’s review could take more than six months, Fowler said.
