Who’s good?

It’s the question repeated over and over each spring while traditional powers and hopeful upstarts get back on the field. Recent history and preseason scrimmages provide a glimpse of what’s to come. Somers won a NYSPHSAA state title last year. Iona Prep celebrated another CHSAA state crown.

There’s a pretty good chance we’re going to see two more teams succeed at the highest levels. The chase is just getting underway. We’ll be posting the lohud Boys Lacrosse Power Rankings each Monday during the season. Here are some of the favorites coming into the season:

2026 lohud Preseason Boys Lacrosse Power Rankings

1. Mamaroneck: A pair of returning All-Americans, Jake Reese and Carsen Winters, headline what could be the deepest team in Section 1. Last year: 13-7

2. Iona Prep: There aren’t many scoring tandems with the experience and the breakdown ability of returning All-American attackmen Tim Plunkett and Billy Haggerty. Last year: 14-6

3. Rye: Do you think watching Somers win sectional and state titles last spring will motivate a Garnets team bursting with playmakers? Last year: 15-4

4. Yorktown: A little more depth might be the difference for the Huskers, who boast the No. 1 goalie in the Class of 2026 in Hunter Mezzatesta. Last year: 11-8

5. Bronxville: Watch these guys coming off the bus, there aren’t many teams in Section 1 with this kind of physical build. Last year: 14-6

6. Somers: The reigning NYSPHSAA Class C champions will need a minute to break in the newcomers, but this team remains a contender. Last year: 19-3

7. John Jay-Cross River: Winning a sectional title might be a longshot given the competition, but there were some youngsters on the field showing promise a year ago. Last year: 7-11

8. Greeley: Momentum counts for something and winning a Section 1 Class B title last spring was a jolt of adrenaline for this program. Last year: 16-4

9. Scarsdale: No matter who’s on the roster this team has a habit of peaking in May and making rival Mamaroneck nervous in June. Last year: 11-8

10. Stepinac: Last season was more collapse than teardown, but the Crusaders hit the reset button and are changing direction. Last year: 5-12
