Local pool takes part in world’s largest swim lesson

The Town of Vestal Recreation Department is hosting a “World’s Largest Swimming Lesson” event to raise awareness about water safety as July 4 grows near.

In a June 15 press release, the Town of Vestal announced the Recreation Department will be hosting the lesson, part of an international event, to “teach fundamental swimming and safety skills that can help save lives.”

Drowning is the leading cause of unintended death for children ages 1-4, the release states, and is the third leading cause of “unintentional injury death worldwide.”

The goal of the WLSL is to teach life-saving skills ahead of the “highest-risk holiday weekend of the year for water-related accidents,” according to the release.

Local residents who choose to take part in the Vestal swimming lesson will be some of thousands across the world doing the same. Here’s what to know about the event.
