A Kirkwood man is in custody following a brief standoff with Broome County Sheriff’s deputies.
Deputies responded at about 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 to a report of a man driving in circles on the lawn of a residence on Bevier Street in the Town of Kirkwood. The man allegedly fired a weapon which struck an electrical transformer on the property, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
That man, identified as Adam K. Smith, 46, fled the scene and struck a vehicle that had pulled into the driveway, authorities said.
Investigators received information on Dec. 4 that Smith was armed with a weapon and standing outside his residence at 32 Krager Rd. in Kirkwood.
When troopers responded to the scene, Smith retreated into the house and refused to come outside. Residents in the area were notified to stay in their homes as law enforcement closed in on the house.
The sheriff’s office utilized drones, cell phones and a Long-Range Acoustic Device to communicate with Smith and convince him to surrender. Eventually, after a brief standoff, Smith exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.
A search warrant was executed and deputies discovered two unregistered handguns, about 40 long guns and “various types of narcotics” in Smith’s residence, police said.
Smith was charged with two felonies and one misdemeanor, including two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree mischief, second-degree reckless endangerment, five counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and illegal discharge of a firearm.
Smith was turned over to the Broome County Correction Facility for centralized arraignment.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the New York State Police.
