The biggest storyline heading into the New York Jets’ Week 1 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers is undeniably the one surrounding Aaron Rodgers.
The Jets and Rodgers underwent a messy breakup this offseason after their two-year stint together came nowhere near meeting internal or external expectations. The veteran quarterback then signed a one-year deal with the Steelers, who the NFL wisely made the Jets’ first 2025 opponent.
One of the players Rodgers allegedly never got along with in East Rutherford was superstar wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
The two connected for 98 receptions throughout 2024, but strong indications are that their relationship was strictly a work-based one. Speaking with the media on Thursday, Wilson confirmed he hasn’t spoken with Rodgers since his departure.
“I ain’t talked to Aaron since he left, so wish him the best this season,” Wilson told reporters. “Yeah, but we ain’t chopped it up since he left.”
The Jets ended the season 5-12, a campaign marred with dysfunction.
During that, it was clear Rodgers looked toward his other receiver and old friend, Davante Adams, much more often than Wilson last season.
Meanwhile Wilson has routinely praised new starting quarterback Justin Fields for his keep-your-head-down approach, and for the way he’s acclimated into the Jets’ locker room. Wilson kept his comments regarding Rodgers cordial, but it’s fair to assume there’ll be no warm embrace between former teammates on Sunday.
In terms of Rodgers, he, like Wilson, took a low-key approach when previewing Sunday.
“It’s Week 1,” Rodgers told reporters this week.
After Rodgers was upset at how his departure from New York went, mostly relating to Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, everyone knows the emotions are much higher than that.
Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 season.
