How to dispose of hazardous waste in Chemung County

Chemung County residents will have an opportunity to dispose of hazardous household waste free of charge May 16. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is open to county residents only, according to a community announcement. Businesses are not eligible to participate.

Pre-registration is required and will be available by phone through May 13. Residents can call Cornell Cooperative Extension at 607-734-4453 between 9 a.m. and noon or 1-4 p.m. on weekdays to reserve a spot. When registering, participants should have a list of accepted items. Electronics will not be accepted, according to the announcement.

Accepted materials include common household chemicals and automotive products such as ammonia, antifreeze, brake fluid, and gasoline. Paint, solvents, pesticides, and pool chemicals are also among the items that can be dropped off. Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes, mercury-containing items, and old chemistry set supplies will be accepted as well.
