A High Wind Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, Chautauqua, Jefferson and Lewis counties.

Forecasters said southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph.

The warning includes Rochester, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Batavia, Canandaigua, Geneseo, Jamestown, Watertown and surrounding communities.

The Weather Service warned that strong winds could bring down trees and power lines, causing scattered power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Officials noted that fully leafed trees are more vulnerable to wind damage this time of year.

Wind Advisory remains in effect elsewhere

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday for Cattaraugus and Allegany counties, where southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.

Wayne, northern Cayuga and Oswego counties are also under a Wind Advisory from 4 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday. Wind gusts in those areas could reach 40 to 50 mph.

What residents should do

The Weather Service urges residents to secure outdoor objects and use caution when driving, particularly in high-profile vehicles.

People are also advised to avoid wooded areas and stay away from trees when possible as strong winds move through the region.
