Golf tournaments on the horizon in Elmira, Corning areas | Summer rec

Even with all the rainy weather we’ve had in the past month and a half, there were still a number of golf tournaments that were played at the local courses around the area. And with the arrival of June, the count for the number of golf tournaments and events will certainly be on the rise.

Tomorrow, June 6 the Elmira Police Benevolent Association will host its 15th Annual Captain and Crew Golf Tournament hosted by the Elmira PD and held at Willowcreek Golf Course in Big Flats.

Check-in time for this event will begin at 8 a.m. and the tournament will commence with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The format is a four-person per team scramble and will offer a whole shipload of prizes along with door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. They will also entertain an optional skins game.

There are a couple of very popular golf tournaments coming up at Indian Hills Golf Club this month. On the weekend of June 19-21, Indian Hills will be hosting the ever-popular Walt McGill Memorial Tournament. This is a two-man scramble format that runs for two days. Teams will be flighted after the first round on Saturday, June 19. The final round takes place the next day.

Entry fee for the McGill is $350 per team. That ticket includes a practice round on Friday, two 18-hole with cart sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Cart for the practice round is not included. Players will also get a hot dog and a drink at the turn on both rounds and they will be treated to a steak dinner in the club’s dining room following the Saturday round. There will also be optional skins games and cash pools both days.

First place in each flight will be awarded $500 per team in pro shop gift certificates. Second place in each flight gets $300 per team while third place is worth $200 per team with the fourth place team getting $100 per team. All players will play from age appropriate tees. You must be at least 60 years old to hit from the senior tees. No exceptions.

As we celebrate the 250th birthday of this great country, Indian Hills will once again host its Annual Red, White & Blue July 4th Scramble.

This is a four-person per team scramble event with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Team are welcome to participate. There will be pro shop gift certificates for the top teams (depending on the number of entries) in each division. Those competing in the Mixed division must include two men and two women. All teams will alternate playing from red, white and blue tees.

Entry fee for the Red, White and Blue Tournament is $60 for members and $85 for non-members and all are welcome to participate. But, be advised, this event fills up fast. Entry fee includes 18 holes of golf with cart, BBQ lunch after the event, hot dog and drink at the turn and a 250th year anniversary tee gift, compliments of the staff at Indian Hills. There will be an optional skins game available as well.

Entry blanks for both of these tournaments at Indian Hills are available at the pro shop during regular business hours. Extra lunches for the Red, White and Blue Tournament, at a cost, will be available and you can order them when you turn in your entry blank and fee.

Youth golf clinic June 27

If you have any youngsters who are interested in getting into golf and doing it a fun way, there is a great Junior Golf Clinic coming up on Saturday, June 27 at Indian Hills.

This clinic is open to youngsters ages 5 to 13. It begins at 10 a.m. with an obstacle course warm-up. Then the kids spend a half an hour each on putting and the full swing. After a break for lunch, it’s gonna be 45 minutes of ‘Golf Baseball’. So the full clinic runs from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for all kids.

The cost for the clinic is $40 per child or $35 each for two kids in the same family. This is being taught by Joe Haight, the resident PGA pro at Indian Hills who is an ADM (American Developmental Model) certified instructor, using SNAG golf equipment.

This sounds like a great way for kids to get introduced to the sport of golf and have a lot of fun doing it. To sign up for this clinic, stop in the pro shop at Indian Hills or contact Joe Haight at 607-523-8060.
