Bryan Hudson has moved into significant first-team center reps for the New York Giants, a development driven by injuries to both John Michael Schmitz Jr. and Lucas Patrick.
Schmitz is working through concussion protocol, while Patrick is managing an older knee injury and is scheduled to receive PRP treatment.
“Another old knee, so we’re going to just have to see how that goes. He’s going to get some PRP and see if it helps,” head coach John Harbaugh said of Patrick.
Without those absences, Hudson would likely be operating primarily with the third team. Instead, the coaching staff has elevated him into work with the starters after already increasing his snaps with the second unit.
“I think he’s done really well,” Harbaugh said. “It’s funny because we did feel like we needed to get him in there, even with the twos, and then now with the ones, and he’s risen to the occasion so far.”
Hudson’s ability to step up has provided needed continuity along the interior offensive line during a stretch of camp marked by several veteran soft-tissue and recovery issues. His steady presence gives the Giants a functional option at center while Schmitz progresses through protocol and Patrick’s knee is evaluated further.
As the team shifts its emphasis toward technique and situational execution this week, Hudson’s early success with the top group stands as one of the clearer positive developments on the offensive line.
