Several flood advisories and warnings were in effect across New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley early Monday as heavy rain and thunderstorms moved through the region.
Flood advisory, flash flood warning issued
The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for New York City and Westchester County from 5:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. Monday. A broader flood watch remains in effect through Monday evening.
Forecasters said thunderstorms moving north from the south could produce 0.5 to 1 inch of rain in a short period, leading to minor flooding. Areas expected to see the greatest impacts include Queens, Brooklyn, Yonkers, New Rochelle, Rye and parts of northern New Jersey.
Additional thunderstorms later Monday could bring rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, particularly across New York City and nearby parts of Westchester County.
Flash flood warning for three counties
A flash flood warning was also issued until 7:45 a.m. for Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties.
The National Weather Service said 1 to 1.5 inches of rain had already fallen, with another 1 to 2 inches possible by 8 a.m. Communities under the warning include New City, Ossining, Peekskill, Monsey, Nanuet, Mahopac, Haverstraw and Tarrytown.
Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways and never drive through standing water. Flooding is most likely in low-lying and poor-drainage areas, as well as near rivers and streams.
Downstate New York forecast
Monday
Cloudy with a high near 81. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, with locally heavy rainfall possible. Additional rainfall of up to 1 inch is possible in some locations.
Monday night will become gradually clearer, with a low around 65. Showers are expected to end during the evening, with up to a quarter-inch of additional rainfall possible.
Tuesday
Mostly sunny with a high near 82. Tuesday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 67. A slight chance of showers develops after 2 a.m.
Wednesday
Partly sunny with a high near 82. There’s a 40% chance of showers during the day.
Wednesday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 71. A slight chance of showers continues into the evening.
Thursday
Partly sunny with a high near 85. Showers and thunderstorms become more likely during the afternoon and evening.
Thursday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 73.
Friday
Mostly sunny with a high near 86. There’s a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
Friday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 73 and a chance of showers.
Saturday
Mostly sunny with a high near 85. A chance of showers remains in the forecast.
Saturday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 72.
Sunday
Mostly sunny with temperatures in the mid-80s. Rain chances will depend on the timing of another approaching weather system.
