Marv Levy, the legendary head coach who guided the Bills to their greatest era, celebrated his 101st birthday on Monday, Aug. 3.
Levy, Buffalo’s head coach from 1986-97, lead a Bills team loaded with superstars to four Super Bowl appearances in the early 1990s. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
His overall record as a head coach stands at 143-112 with two teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. It was with the Bills (112-70) that Levy became a legend.
The Bills wished Levy a happy birthday on social media Monday.
Brady wishes Levy a happy birthday
Current Bills head coach Joe Brady has another connection to Levy through William and Mary. Levy was the head coach at William and Mary from 1964 to 1968. Brady played at William and Mary 2013-2014 before working as linebackers coach for two years.
“He’s given me wisdom, which is unbelievable. And 101, I’m just hoping to get to 37,” Brady said. “And he’s as sharp as it gets… Happy birthday to Marv Levy.”
Levy was one of the great NFL orators
When Levy turned 100 in 2025, veteran Bills reporter Sal Maiorana called Levy one of the greatest orators the NFL has ever known.
“He would share anecdotes with his players – whether it was in a team meeting, or in a speech before or after a game, or maybe just in a quiet one-on-one moment – that left them either deeply moved, or just plain confused,” Sal Maiorana wrote.
He is also the source of the greatest inspirational quote tied to the Bills. “Where else would you rather be than right here, right now?”
