Elmira man originally charged with attempted murder in hammer attack sentenced to 6 years

An Elmira man originally charged with attempted murder for a November 2024 hammer attack will serve six years in prison after pleading guilty to a lesser charge.

Jacob S. Bulkley, 20, was sentenced Aug. 4 in Chemung County Court, and will also serve five years of post-release supervision once his prison term ends. The court also issued an order of protection on behalf of the victim.

Police officers were dispatched to a residence on Magee Street around 10:18 p.m. Nov. 13 for a reported disturbance involving a victim who was struck in the head with a hammer, according to the Elmira Police Department.

Arriving officers determined the victim had sustained multiple head wounds. The victim was transported to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said Bulkley was related to the victim but didn’t indicate how. He wasn’t at the residence when police officers arrived but was taken into custody a short time later.

In January of this year, a Chemung County grand jury indicted Bulkley on felony charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, and second-degree assault for the attack.

In June, Bulkley pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of first-degree attempted assault. He has been incarcerated in the Chemung County Jail since his arrest.
