Driver charged with homicide after fatal I-90 crash

A 28-year-old man was charged with several felonies – including aggravated vehicular homicide – in a wrong way crash that killed another driver on Interstate 90 in Albany after allegedly driving drunk.

Wrong-way vehicle struck oncoming car

Ibra Ndiaye, 28, of Albany was driving east on westbound lanes of Interstate 90, near Exit 5A, and crashed head-on into a westbound vehicle just before 2 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, according to New York State Police.

1 killed, 1 seriously injured

The driver of the westbound vehicle was Safwan Mohamed, 20, of Schenectady, troopers said. He died at the scene.

Ndiaye, who drove the wrong-way eastbound vehicle, suffered serious injuries due to the crash and was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment, according to State Police. His injuries were severe but were not considered life-threatening, troopers said.

Driver charged with felonies

Ndiaye was charged with the following felonies:

He was also charged with reckless driving, a misdemeanor.

Ndiaye was arraigned by an Albany City Court judge in his hospital room at Albany Medical Center on Monday, according to State Police. He is being held without bail and is in the custody of the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

Troopers said he will remain hospitalized until medically cleared, at which time he will be moved to the Albany County Correctional Facility.
