De'Von Achane extension makes Jets' Breece Hall contract look better

The New York Jets placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on running back Breece Hall earlier this offseason. That bought general manager Darren Mougey time to negotiate a long-term contract extension with Hall’s representation.

A deal was reached with Hall last week, as he inked a three-year, $45.75 million extension that secures his future in East Rutherford.

Hall believes in what the Jets are building. The extension will pay Hall approximately $15.25 million per season.

If fans thought the Jets overpaid, a recent contract extension within the division says otherwise. The Miami Dolphins recently signed running back De’Von Achane to a four-year extension worth up to $68 million.

We’re still awaiting the complete financial details of Achane’s extension with Miami, but the $68 million indication means the contract is worth $17 million per season. That’s roughly $1.7 million more per year than Hall’s deal, and it’s also one year longer than Hall’s extension with the Jets.

That means more long-term financial risk.

Paying Achane $17 million annually would make him the third-highest paid back in the NFL behind just Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey. The dynamic Achane rushed for a career-high 1,350 yards and eight touchdowns last season while averaging an explosive 5.7 yards per carry.

Achane earned that extension, but it also proves the Jets got good value on Hall’s extension.
