Corning Veterans Day honors those who set aside civilian pursuits to serve nation's cause

Despite chilly weather, a large crowd attended the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 11 honoring veterans of U.S. troops at Veterans Memorial Park, off Park Avenue, in Corning.

The annual Veterans Day event is held by the Corning American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4218 in Corning.

“We are commemorating the service of veterans of all wars and their service,” said Brian Frances, commander of the Corning American Legion, who served 26 years in the U.S. Army. “We remember how men and women set aside their civilian pursuits to serve the nation’s cause. Defending the freedom of mankind and preserving our precious American heritage.”

Frances said Veterans Day honors all military members and those who died serving in the U.S. armed forces.

“We recognize service to our country, and her cause does not end with the termination of military service,” Frances said. “We continue our endeavors on behalf of an honorable world peace, with a feeling of profound gratitude to God and to the men and women who gave their lives as their part of the cost of this noblest of causes to serve.”

The American Legion Ritual Team, the VFW Ritual Team and the Caledonian Highlanders Pipe & Drum Band also took part in the ceremony. Six-year-old Noah Spaulding also sang at the event.

More events were planned in Corning later in the day.
