Binghamton Plaza plans taking shape. Locals can weigh in this week

A Binghamton Plaza community meeting is scheduled to gather input to decide the future of one of the city’s longest-awaited redevelopment projects.

From 5:30-7 p.m. on May 19, Binghamton residents will have the chance to attend a community meeting at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School on Ogden Street. The meeting will begin with a presentation at 5:45, after which residents will be able to share their thoughts and concerns regarding the site’s future.

In January, City of Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham announced the start of pre-demolition work for the site following the city’s victory in a 2024 eminent domain case, which confirmed the city’s right to purchase the property. In March, Kraham announced the site’s Project Advisory Committee would be holding its first meeting, as well as the launch of a new project website.

The community meeting will mark the first of its kind for the project in a public engagement period that will run through June. A second comment period will be held in September and October 2026, with the full project expected to be complete by spring 2027.

Existing businesses in the plaza will be relocated, including the popular New York Pizzeria, which will relocate to 71 Robinson St. Throughout the course of the project, Kraham has made it clear that several outbuildings, including Kurious Kids Childcare, are not included in demolition plans for the site.

For those unable to attend the meeting, the project’s website gives residents an opportunity to comment on a virtual vision board. The project’s website also features a timeline, updates and information on community engagement, including the meeting to be held on May 19.
