Barack Obama will return to New York City’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” tonight as one of the last guest appearances before the show’s end on May 21.
Obama’s upcoming appearance comes weeks after his headline-making visit earlier this month, when the former president made a light-hearted, yet pointed remark about the current presidency.
On tonight’s episode, Obama is expected to take part in Colbert’s rapid-fire “Questionert” rather than a sit-down interview.
Here is everything you need to know about the former president’s return, and probably last, visit to “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Obama’s May 5 ‘Late Show’ visit draws headlines
During the May 5 episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, Colbert and Obama joked about his next plans after the show’s end.
“I’m looking for a new gig soon,” Colbert said, alluding to the end of his long-running CBS talk show, “And a lot of people tell me I should run for president.”
Obama laughed, responding that Colbert has “the look,” then adding, “You have the hair.”
Colbert replied, “For the record, I think it’s a stupid idea. How dumb do you think it is for people to say that I should run for president?”
“Let me put it this way: I think that you could perform significantly better than some folks that we’ve seen. I have great confidence in that,” Obama said while laughing.
Colbert thanked Obama and then asked if that was a formal endorsement. The 44th president clarified: “It was not.”
Obama did not mention President Donald Trump in this part of the interview, but many people believe the implication was clear.
In an emailed statement to USA TODAY on May 6, White House spokesman Davis Ingle called Obama “a classless moron who clearly suffers from a severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his brain.”
“He is a total disgrace for all the division he has sowed upon this country and history will not judge him well,” Ingle said. “The only special interest guiding the Trump Administration’s decision-making is the best interest of the American people. Only pathetic trainwrecks like Stephen Colbert would waste their time interviewing one of the worst presidents in history on his failing show.”
Will Obama’s stop at “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” tonight conjure up even more headlines? We will have to wait and see.
How to watch Obama on ‘The Late Show’ tonight
Barack Obama will appear on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” tonight, May 13, at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS.

When is the last episode of ‘The Late Show’?
The final episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” is set to air on May 21.
CBS announced on April 6 that “The Late Show” 11:35 p.m. slot will be filled with “Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen” after the final May 21 episode.
The comedy talk show, hosted by Byron Allen, originally premiered in 2006 and currently airs on CBS immediately after “The Late Show.”
