Banged up Army football players returning to lineup ahead of Navy game

Army safety Casey Larkin laid on the field at the Alamodome just two weeks ago, wondering what was happening to him. He took a hit in the game against Texas-San Antonio and started feeling the effects of what is commonly known as “a stinger.” The training staff kept him motionless and flat while they assessed his condition.

Was it scary?

“A little bit,” Larkin said on Tuesday night after practice, four days ahead of the regular-season finale with Navy. “Scared a little bit of people.”

The great news is Larkin was eventually allowed to sit up and walked off the field on his own. Since then, he said he’s “spent a lot of time, just working on the body, getting right,” most importantly adding that he’s “Feeling great.”

His return, and that of a number of full- and part-time starters, has Army literally feeling better headed into its clash with Navy just days away.

A 2025 season that started in the preseason heat of July has now settled into its final weeks in the bitter cold of December, more than four months of pounding providing athletic trainers plenty of work and coaches with more back-up plans.

“I think this time of year everybody’s kind of dealing with the culmination of the season,” said Army offensive coordinator Cody Worley on Tuesday night. “We’re expected to hopefully have some guys back.”

All-star offensive lineman Paolo Gennarelli has been banged up of late, missing the past two contests, but has been practicing. His status for Saturday is still questionable, but head coach Jeff Monken said he anticipates that Gennarelli will play.

The defensive side of the ball has also seen its share of bumps and bruises, but Monken confirmed this is the healthiest the bunch has been in weeks. Nose tackle Kody Harris-Miller got injured in game one and missed six contests; he returned sooner than expected, just in time for the Air Force game. Jacob Tuioti started in his absence but got hurt against Tulane; he missed three starts but saw duty against UTSA and has returned to No. 2 on the depth chart.

Larkin is slated to start his 12th game at strong safety against Navy, and cornerback Justin Weaver, who missed three games, is slated for his second start since his return. Jabril Williams has been slated for a backup corner role.

“I’m glad to have some of those guys back,” Monken said at his Tuesday press conference. “We’ve got the typical game-12 bumps and bruises that probably aren’t going to go away. But some guys that have been out and maybe missed time are finding their way back into practice and will be prepared for the game on Saturday, and that’s certainly encouraging.

“We’re going to need everybody we’ve got, so I’m glad those guys are getting healthy again.”
