A female was killed and three other people were wounded in a series of overnight shootings as Rochester police dispersed a large, disorderly crowd that gathered along North Clinton Avenue early Saturday.
Police are investigating whether the shootings are connected. No arrests have been announced.
Female found fatally shot during crowd dispersal
According to Rochester police, a crowd of several hundred people gathered on North Clinton Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Friday.
Officers began dispersing the crowd from the area of North Clinton Avenue and Upper Falls Boulevard as part of a planned operation. As officers moved north, they encountered multiple instances of violent and riotous behavior, police said.
When officers reached the area of North Clinton Avenue and Morrill Street, multiple shots were fired within the crowd. Officers immediately deployed riot control agents, causing the crowd to disperse.
Afterward, officers found a female on Morrill Street suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not released her identity.
Three others wounded in separate shootings
As officers continued dispersing disorderly crowds throughout the city’s northeast section, several additional shootings were reported.
At about 12:37 a.m., officers responded to a local hospital after a 26-year-old Rochester man arrived with at least one gunshot wound to his lower body. His injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening. Detectives are still working to determine where the shooting occurred and what led to it.
At about 2:05 a.m., officers responded to Weaver Street near Joseph Avenue, where they found a 38-year-old Rochester woman with a gunshot wound to her lower body. She was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
About 13 minutes later, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation near Norton Street and North Clinton Avenue. A short time later, officers learned a 41-year-old Monroe County man had arrived at a local hospital with at least one gunshot wound to his lower body. Investigators determined he was shot near the location of the ShotSpotter activation. His injuries were also non-life-threatening.
Detectives investigating possible connections
Rochester police said detectives are working to determine whether any of the overnight shootings are related.
No suspects are in custody.
