WNBA officiating has been under fire throughout the 2025 season from fans and players across various teams. The Fever have found themselves in the middle of it quite a bit this season and frustration seems to be boiling over.
In Tuesday’s win over the Connecticut Sun, there were many physical moments and plays that went uncalled and the game even featured an official being the aggressor in a conversation with Caitlin Clark. The lack of calls on those physical plays may have led to Clark reaggravating her groin injury late in the game, which left many fans extremely frustrated.
And one Fever player took to social media to express her problems with the officials.
Sophie Cunningham has not been shy this season. Whether it was hard foul late in the game against the Sun earlier this season or speaking about her thoughts on the WNBA expansion cities, Cunningham isn’t afraid to speak her mind. That remained true when she quote tweeted a video of her being elbowed in the head in Tuesday’s game against the Sun.
Cunningham insinuated that the officials in the game said she flopped on this play after there was no call. The video shows otherwise and is not a good look for the league’s officiating, which is already fighting an uphill PR battle.
The WNBA’s officiating problem isn’t just a one team or single player issue anymore. It’s a league-wide problem and needs to be addressed soon. Because if there’s one thing sports fans hate more than anything else, it’s bad officiating. And right now, that’s exactly what the WNBA has.
