Iowa football: Did Hawkeyes land in Top 25 of US LBM Coaches Poll ahead of Cy-Hawk rivalry?

IOWA CITY — Coach Kirk Ferentz’s Iowa football team still received votes but remains outside the Top 25 of the US LBM Coaches Poll, released Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The Hawkeyes opened the 2025 season with a 34-7 win over UAlbany. Quarterback Mark Gronowski was underwhelming in his Iowa debut, but the Hawkeyes excelled around him. Iowa ran for more than 300 yards, gave up only 18 total yards in the second half and got impactful contributions from kicker Drew Stevens on special teams.

The Hawkeyes, who did not receive votes in the new Associated Press poll released Sept. 2, now take a significant step up in competition after their Week 1 victory.

The Hawkeyes travel to Ames to take on rival Iowa State on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Cyclones have started the season 2-0, including a win over Kansas State in Dublin, Ireland. Iowa State checks in at No. 18 in the newest US LBM Coaches Poll.

If you’re an Iowa fan looking for some hope, here’s a baffling stat: The road team has won each of the last five matchups in the Cy-Hawk series. Iowa has accounted for three of those victories.

Furthermore, the last time Iowa lost in Ames was 2011.

Saturday’s game could very well be the first major defining moment for Iowa’s 2025 season.
