Now four training camp practices in, how are the Indianapolis Colts performing in the early going?
There is still a long way to go before roles for Week 1 of the regular season are officially determined. And, of course, what takes place as the season unfolds can continue to impact playing time.
But what we know right now about where each of these rookies is positioned can provide us with some insight into what their roles in Year 1 might end up looking like.
So here’s what we know right now.
LB CJ Allen
Once activated off the PUP list, Allen has been back at his starting linebacker role in the middle of the Colts’ defense.
S AJ Haulcy
Coming out of offseason programs, Haulcy seemed to be the front-runner for the starting safety role next to Cam Bynum. However, through four practices, those snaps have gone to Hunter Wohler. Based on what Lou Anarumo said last week, my guess is that Haulcy’s time is coming; the team is just rotating through everyone to ensure they have a well-rounded evaluation.
G Jalen Farmer
Farmer has been working with the second-team offense, seeing snaps at both the right and left guard positions, according to Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports.
LB Bryce Boettcher
The Colts continue to rotate at linebacker as the team searches for its best starting configuration. Boettcher and Akeem Davis-Gaither, however, are likely the two players competing for those starting snaps alongside of Allen.
DE George Gumbs
Gumbs has spent his time with the third-team defense, according to Noah Compton of Horseshoe Huddle. While he possesses plenty of upside, development is needed, as he is still relatively new to playing defensive end.
DE Caden Curry
Like Gumbs, Curry has been working with the third-team defense. GM Chris Ballard is very bullish about Curry, but there are more experienced players currently ahead of him on the depth chart.
RB Seth McGowan
McGowan is competing with DJ Giddens for the backup running back role.
WR Deion Burks
On paper, Burks is someone who could be in the mix for the WR3 role or at least a rotational role. However, it doesn’t sound like those opportunities have come his way. Once Alec Pierce is back, Burks may at best be sixth or seventh on the depth chart, behind Pierce, Josh Downs, Ashton Dulin, Laquon Treadwell, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and potentially Anthony Gould.
