Prediction: Indiana 35, UCLA 17: Can lightning strike twice?
After firing its head coach and both coordinators, UCLA pulled off a stunning upset earlier this month by beating Penn State as 24.5-point underdogs. The Bruins were the first 0-4 team to beat a top-10 opponent in 40 years and have now won three straight games heading into Bloomington.
Tennessee transfer quarterback Nico Iamaleava has been a big reason for the impressive turnaround. He found his footing after Jerry Neuheisel took over play-calling duties from former IU quarterbacks coach Tino Sunseri and started churning out explosive plays just like he did in Knoxville with his dual-threat skill set.
It’s why this is the most challenging opponent left on Indiana’s schedule, but momentum can only go so far. The Hoosiers are a more talented team on both sides of the ball and have yet to lose a game during Cignetti’s tenure when it was favored.
Maybe it won’t be the prettiest of wins. Maybe Mendoza doesn’t put up Heisman-like numbers. Maybe Iamaleava burns the defense for a couple of long touchdowns. It won’t change the result of IU leaving Memorial Stadium with a victory.
