Wade Boggs cancels Night of Memories appearance due to family emergency

EVANSVILLE — The Tri-State Hot Stove League provided an update for the upcoming Night of Memories charity and fundraising event Wednesday, Jan. 21.

The 26th annual event is still currently scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24 at Meeks Family Fieldhouse on the University of Evansville campus despite the potential for incoming winter weather. However, the guest list won’t include Pro Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs. He canceled his scheduled attendance due to “an unforeseen family emergency.”

“Night of Memories fans, unfortunately we have some bad news to pass along,” the Tri-State Hot Stove League posted on Facebook. “Due to an unforeseen family emergency, Wade Boggs has had to cancel his attendance at this year’s event. Our prayers go out to the Boggs family during this time. If we receive any additional information, we will try to pass this along.”

Boggs played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily with the Boston Red Sox. He was a five-time AL batting champion with 3,010 career hits and 12 All-Star selections. Boggs won a World Series with the New York Yankees in 1996 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.

The group later updated that Zach Messinger also canceled his appearance. The former Castle High School standout is a pitcher in the New York Yankees organization. He made 33 appearances between AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and AA Somerset last year.

The other current featured guests are Don Mattingly, David Freese, Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger and master of ceremonies Wayne Hagin. Also scheduled to be in attendance are Evansville-area minor leaguers Cameron Decker (North), Matthew Fisher (Memorial) and Cam Tilly (Castle).

Tickets can be purchased online at hotstoveleague.org, along with more information.
