EVANSVILLE – If you try to go to the website of one of Evansville’s news stations, you’ll end up at another.
Starting at least as early as Monday, any visitor to WEVV’s 44 News website was automatically redirected to 14News.com. The move comes about three months after the Federal Communications Commission approved WFIE owner Gray Media’s bid to purchase WEVV and nine other stations from Allen Media Group.
That doesn’t mean 44 News has gone dark. The station is still churning out newscasts. It just doesn’t have a website anymore.
On Tuesday, the Courier & Press sent 14 News’ general manager Jamie Bremer three questions: Will the broadcasts remain separate? Will 44’s staff be reduced or replaced? And is WEVV still considered an independent operation from WFIE, or have the resources merged?
“As you can imagine, there are a lot of moving parts with bringing the stations together,” she said.
Although the deal it was initially announced in August 2025, it took several months to weave through regulatory approval. Bremer said WFIE’s management had never even met WEVV’s staff until May, shortly after the sale finalized.
“Since then, we have been working to get to know the employees and evaluate strengths, opportunities, needs, weaknesses, etc.,” she said. “We are in the middle of evaluating all that and working hard to bring more local news to the greater community. Beyond changing the WEVV website, we do not have any finalized plans ready to announce at this time.”
But Gray Media itself is on the record regarding one key detail.
Last year Kevin Latek, the company’s executive vice president and chief legal and development officer, told the Courier & Press his company “bought (WEVV) because we like what (it’s) doing and think it can add to what WFIE is doing.”
“We have never, ever bought a TV station and shut it down,” he said.
