As long as Anthony Richardson remains with the Indianapolis Colts, he and Riley Leonard will be competing for the backup quarterback role.
Following the first training camp practice on Wednesday, Shane Steichen is pleased with what he’s seen from Richardson, as well as Leonard.
“I’m really pleased with where AR is at coming off the eye injury in the spring and then going into training camp and Riley, too, making good strides as well,” Steichen said. “So, those guys will rotate, those guys compete and I’m looking forward to that competition with those two guys.”
As Richardson discussed during offseason programs, a priority for him has been on his footwork and overall mechanics.
Footwork is often the foundation for accuracy for a quarterback. Balance is key, but a quarterback’s feet must also move in unison with his eyes as he works through his progressions. Continuing to refine his overall throwing mechanics will be crucial as well when it comes to improved accuracy.
Through his first three NFL seasons, Richardson has a career completion rate of 50.6 percent, according to PFF.
Richardson’s trade request remains on the table, and it’s possible he ends up elsewhere. However, as GM Chris Ballard said, the Colts aren’t going to “give him away” either.
