One of the two Indianapolis police officers shot last week was struck by a fellow officer’s bullet, police confirmed.
At about 10:15 p.m. on July 22, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called to a disturbance in the 8000 block of East 37th Street, near North Franklin Road. A 911 caller warned that a man involved was possibly armed.
Officers who responded to the scene found a man and a woman outside of a home. The man shot at police, and at least three officers returned fire, a department spokesperson said in the immediate aftermath of the shootout.
The alleged shooter was hit, as were two police officers. The man accused of shooting police, 21-year-old Dalys Scott Kohl Jett, was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
The two officers were hospitalized and ultimately released in stable condition. Now, IMPD believes that while one of the officers was struck by a bullet from Jett’s handgun, the other was struck by a colleague’s bullet during the melee.
IMPD previously disclosed the officers involved in the shooting were 11-year officer Donald Meier, four-year officer Jessica Dickinson and three-year officer Michael Totten.
Jett’s family has called for transparency in the aftermath of the shooting.
“Dalys cannot speak for himself, and our family will continue to pursue the truth while preserving every legal right and remedy available to us,” a statement released on his family’s behalf read in part.
The department agreed to allow the family to review all unredacted body-worn camera footage of the call that preceded his death on July 30 at 10 a.m., according to another family statement.
The body-worn camera footage has not been released to the general public.
