LAFAYETTE, IN — Rumors of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in town Monday are unfounded, according to several local law enforcement agencies.
The rumor started with reports of ICE in the downtown Lafayette area, but the Journal & Courier walked through the downtown area and alleys Monday morning and did not find any activity.
The Journal & Courier reached out to Lafayette and West Lafayette police during the time that ICE was supposed to be in town Monday. They were not aware of any federal agents working in the cities.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff Bob Goldsmith said federal law enforcement agencies typically give his department a courtesy notification if their agents are working in the county.
“Nobody’s ever told me they were here,” Goldsmith said. “As far as ICE details in town, I don’t know of any.”
He is unaware of whether ICE has changed its courtesy notifications because of the recent unrest in cities where ICE agents have detained people suspected of illegally being in the country.
This is not the first time these rumors have surfaced here on social media or through various other forms of communication.
